Vector Database

A vector database is a specialized type of database designed to store and quickly search for data based on its meaning or similarity, rather than by exact matches. It works by converting data like text, images, or sounds into numerical lists called vectors, which represent the data's characteristics.

How it works

It works by using a process called 'embedding' to create a mathematical representation (vector) of complex data. This allows the database to perform fast similarity searches, finding items that are conceptually 'close' to a query. This is crucial for AI applications that need to understand context and relationships, such as powering recommendation engines or advanced search.

Examples

  • 1.Powering a product recommendation system by finding items similar to a user's past purchases.
  • 2.Enabling an AI chatbot to search its knowledge base for information relevant to a user's question.
  • 3.Organizing a large photo library by allowing users to search for images with similar visual content (e.g., 'find more pictures of sunsets').
