Bootstrapped

In business, 'bootstrapped' describes a company that has been started and grown using its own revenue and resources, without relying on external funding from investors or venture capital.

How it works

This approach forces founders to focus intensely on profitability and organic growth from the very beginning. It matters because it allows founders to retain full control and ownership of their company, though it often means slower initial scaling compared to funded competitors.

Examples

  • 1.A software developer uses their savings to build and launch a new app, then reinvests all early customer payments to improve it.
  • 2.A consultant starts a solo agency, using income from their first clients to hire their first employee and expand services.
  • 3.A founder builds a SaaS tool in their spare time, launching a paid beta to fund further development without taking a loan.
