Best Alternatives to publicdesktop.lol in 2025
publicdesktop.lol is a quirky, community-driven web experiment where anyone can claim a permanent icon on a shared desktop for $10, or bid to control the public song and video. It’s a playful, low-cost way to get a tiny slice of internet real estate and engage with a curious audience. If you like the idea but want different mechanics, pricing, or levels of control, here are the best alternatives that offer similar communal billboard or micro-advertising experiences.
Million Dollar Homepage
The original pixel-selling phenomenon. You buy a 10x10 pixel block on a single webpage for $1 per pixel, and your block links to your site. It’s a static, one-time purchase with no ongoing bidding, but it’s the classic template for permanent internet billboards.
Buy a Pixel
A modern take on the pixel grid concept with lower entry costs and a more active community. You can purchase pixels and even upgrade to animated or larger blocks, making it a flexible alternative for those who want more visual impact than a simple icon.
The Million Dollar Page (clone)
If you want the exact same vibe as publicdesktop.lol but with a more established history, this clone offers similar permanent pixel slots with a simpler interface. It’s less interactive (no song/video control) but provides a straightforward, no-frills way to own a piece of the internet.
PixelMap.io
This platform lets you buy pixels on a world map, so your icon is placed on a geographic location of your choice. It’s more thematic and visually engaging than a desktop, and it also supports permanent links, making it a great alternative for location-based branding.
The Public Domain Review – Adopt a Pixel
A creative, artsy alternative where you can 'adopt' a pixel in a collaborative digital artwork. It’s less about advertising and more about supporting a cultural project, but you still get a permanent, visible link. Perfect if you want a more meaningful, community-driven placement.
Bid4Pixels
For those who enjoy the bidding aspect of publicdesktop.lol, this site lets you bid on pixel blocks in a live auction format. It’s more dynamic and competitive, and you can win prime positions on a high-traffic page. Great for short-term campaigns or one-off stunts.
publicdesktop.lol stands out for its playful 'public computer' concept and interactive bidding on media, but if you want a more classic pixel grid, a thematic map, or a more competitive auction, these alternatives offer similar low-cost, permanent or temporary internet billboard experiences. Choose based on whether you prefer simplicity, visual flair, or interactive control.
