Best Alternatives to Notchling in 2025
Looking for apps that make the most of your MacBook's notch? While Notchling adds a charming companion creature with file-shelf and weather features, you might want to explore other tools that turn the notch into a utility hub, media player, or playful pet. Here are the best alternatives to Notchling, each with its own twist on notch-based productivity and fun.
Boring.Notch
If you want a sleek, minimal notch utility without the creature, Boring.Notch transforms the notch into a music player, volume/brightness indicator, and a file drop zone. It's more functional than playful, perfect for users who prefer a clean, professional look over an animated pet.
NotchDrop
NotchDrop is a lightweight, open-source alternative focused purely on the file-shelf feature. Drag files to the notch to temporarily store them, then drop them into any folder or app. It lacks the creature and weather, but it's faster, more customizable, and ideal for power users who only need quick file staging.
Notchmeister
For a more comprehensive notch utility, Notchmeister adds a customizable menu bar, system stats (CPU, RAM, network), and a music visualizer. It doesn't have a pet, but it offers a rich set of widgets and themes, making it a strong choice if you want your notch to be an all-in-one dashboard.
Notch Pet
If you love the idea of a living creature but want more personality, Notch Pet offers a variety of animals (cat, dog, sloth) that react to clicks, typing, and idle time. It includes mini-games and a feeding mechanic, but lacks file shelf and weather. Great for users who prioritize entertainment over utility.
Notchify
Notchify is a free, open-source tool that turns the notch into a music player with album art, progress bar, and volume control. It also supports a simple file drop zone. It's less animated than Notchling but more stable and resource-friendly, making it a good pick for older Macs.
NotchBar
NotchBar focuses on productivity by turning the notch into a dynamic menu bar replacement. You can pin app shortcuts, view calendar events, and see battery/wifi status. It doesn't have a creature or weather, but its drag-and-drop file shelf is robust, and it integrates with Shortcuts for automation.
Notch Weather
For users who specifically want the weather peek feature, Notch Weather is a dedicated widget that shows temperature, conditions, and a 5-day forecast in the notch. It's simple, always-on, and customizable with different weather icons. No creature or file shelf, but it nails the weather aspect with more detail than Notchling.
Notchling stands out by combining a charming animated pet with practical tools like file shelf and weather. However, your choice depends on your priority: Boring.Notch and NotchDrop excel at file management, Notch Pet offers richer creature interactions, Notchmeister and NotchBar provide broader system utilities, and Notch Weather is perfect for weather-only needs. Evaluate whether you want a companion, a utility, or a mix—then pick the one that fits your workflow and personality.
