Best Alternatives to Kindle 2026 in 2025
The Kindle 2026 is Amazon's latest 6-inch e-reader, featuring a smaller, lighter design, a flush-front display, and 30% faster book opening. It also introduces a 32GB aluminum version for the first time. While it's a solid choice for Amazon ecosystem fans, there are several compelling alternatives that offer unique features, different ecosystems, or better value. Here are the best alternatives to the Kindle 2026.
Kobo Clara 2E
The Kobo Clara 2E is a direct competitor with a 6-inch E Ink Carta 1200 display, waterproofing, and 16GB storage. It supports a wider range of file formats and integrates with OverDrive for library books, making it ideal for readers who borrow e-books. Its ComfortLight PRO offers adjustable color temperature, and it's made with recycled plastics.
Kobo Libra 2
If you prefer physical page-turn buttons and a larger 7-inch screen, the Kobo Libra 2 is a great alternative. It offers 32GB storage, waterproofing, and excellent ergonomics with a asymmetrical design. It supports Kobo's ecosystem and is perfect for readers who want a more premium feel without Amazon's restrictions.
PocketBook Era
The PocketBook Era features a 7-inch display, IPX8 waterproofing, and 64GB storage. It stands out with built-in speakers, text-to-speech, and support for a vast array of formats including FB2, EPUB, and MOBI. It also offers cloud sync and a customizable interface, appealing to users who want versatility and audio capabilities.
PocketBook Verse Pro
The PocketBook Verse Pro is a compact 6-inch e-reader with a flush-front display, similar to the Kindle 2026. It offers 16GB storage, IPX8 waterproofing, and a color temperature adjustment. It supports multiple formats and has a user-friendly interface, making it a strong alternative for those who want a smaller device without Amazon's ecosystem.
Kobo Nia
The Kobo Nia is a budget-friendly 6-inch e-reader with a 1024x758 resolution display. While it lacks waterproofing and has a lower resolution than the Kindle 2026, it provides access to Kobo's extensive store and OverDrive integration. It's a good choice for casual readers looking for an affordable alternative.
Boox Palma
The Boox Palma is a unique 6.13-inch e-reader with a phone-like form factor, running Android 11. It offers access to Google Play Store, allowing you to install Kindle, Kobo, and other reading apps. With 128GB storage and a crisp display, it's perfect for tech-savvy users who want a pocketable device that can handle multiple ecosystems.
Kobo Sage
The Kobo Sage is an 8-inch e-reader with a high-resolution display, IPX8 waterproofing, and 32GB storage. It supports Kobo's stylus for note-taking and has physical page-turn buttons. It's a premium alternative for readers who want a larger screen and advanced features like audiobook support via Bluetooth.
While the Kindle 2026 impresses with its faster performance and flush-front design, the alternatives listed above cater to different needs. Kobo devices offer excellent library integration and format support, PocketBook models provide versatility and audio features, and the Boox Palma delivers Android flexibility. Consider your priorities—whether it's ecosystem, screen size, or extra features—to find the best e-reader for you.
